Starting with stories

The syllabus for this English class comprises myriad voices in literature.  One of the overarching themes in the course is the power of stories to reflect, embrace, and even create human experience.

“The Danger of a Single Story” will be our starting point in the class.  This is a Ted Talk by Chimamanda Adiche. From the TED site: “Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.”

Here’s the tedtalks handout, too.  The responses should be ready for next class.
